Working in the competitive branded kids’ wear segment, Neelakshi & Oiendrila Ray, Design Directors at Nee & Oink constantly put in effort to make sure that their label offers something that wins the hearts of both mom and child. While

keeping an eye on retail expansion, efforts are also focused on innovative products for the little ones. “Any startup enterprise has challenges, especially given that we opted to set up our own production facility to keep a tight control on quality. Staffing up to meet our retail partners’ requirements has required concerted efforts from our senior management team,” opines the Design Director duo.

The duo expects its colourful and intricate occasion/festive wear will be well received. “Successes in our earlier lines and feedback from satisfied customers provided important inputs into our new styles. The initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and encouraging,” they explain.

The current portfolio focuses on colourful and intricate ethnic occasionwear. “We tried to focus on comfort, and designs which provide the right mix of styling along with a range of motion, given the active nature of children. We expect to continue to focus on such designs, while also expanding our design slate to provide more everyday types of clothes which mix eastern and western style philosophies,” states Neelakshi Ray.

Festive wear under the label is a reflection of royal India in all its splendor. They have used a plethora of bright happy colours with a lot of intricate work. The winter collection has a more sophisticated colour palette of blacks, neutrals and dusky pinks – inspired by Van Gogh’s Pink Roses. The Brand uses only pure fabrics like cottons, silk georgette and silk tussar for the upcoming collection.

Spreading out retail footprint

Nee & Oink range is stocked by MBOs in Delhi (Goodearth, Kidology), Mumbai (Goodearth, Chamomile, Fizaa) and Chennai (Pappadum). Commenting on the retail strategy, Neelakshi said, “We would like to continue to expand our reach in our core markets of Mumbai and Delhi. We also look forward to retailing in Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad and selected international markets where we have already established a niche customer base.”

It has also launched an online platform but is yet to make an online retail push. “While we intend to build this part of our business, Indian consumers are still relatively slow to adopt online purchasing of clothing. You can find us on nee-oink.com,” she adds.

The company ensures that the process of selecting Nee & Oink clothing is as hassle free as possible, so it focuses on quality manufacturing and practical designs, while keeping bright and vibrant colours and soft fabrics, so children are cooperative and excited in participating in the process with their parents. To keep costs low, a lot of mainstream brands use polyester and other synthetic fabrics, however being fussy moms themselves, Neelakshi and Oiendrila try and keep all Nee & Oink products natural.
