The government is planning to promote khadi as an organic green fabric. In its effort to make khadi an international fabric, the government is looking at ways to brand it under the name ‘Harit Vastra’. The government will collaborate with textile mills to produce and market this brand.

Presently, the government is exploring if Harit Vastra can be commercially produced and marketed like other readymade garments. A private player has been roped in and a feasibility study is being conducted. Also on the card is building an international demand for khadi, by targeting the 2.5 crore NRI community. Minister of state for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Giriraj Singh has already submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister. The plan is also to revamp the 7,000-odd Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) stores across the country. Presently, as per various studies, the market potential for khadi products in India stands at Rs 40,000 crores.

This comes at a time when the government is already thinking of introducing khadi as uniform in schools, hospitals, railways and so on. The market potential for this is Rs 18,000 crores. Matrishwa Foundation, an NGO, and Ministry of Human Resource Development conducted a survey regarding the use of khadi in school uniform. Shailesh Vats of the NGO points out that of the 300 schools surveyed in Delhi, 70 per cent of the principals showed interest in shifting to khadi uniforms.
