In the coming year, India’s largest e-tailer Flipkart will be launching Flipkart Li’l Stars, an exclusive store dedicated to children. The decision has come forth keeping in mind growing sales of children’s clothes and accessories. Last year, sales grew more than three times, adding more than 10 percent to Flipkart’s total fashion business. The company is expecting to grow five-fold in the coming years. What has given Flipkart to the children’s fashion business is the entry of children’s international brands such as The Children’s Place and Poney. In addition, Pepe Jeans has launched a kids’ wear segment and will soon open 10 exclusive stores across the country.

Rishi Vasudev, VP-Fashion, Flipkart, attributes this growth to the growing exposure of parents as well as children to global fashion and an increase in incomes of the Indian working class. A Technopak report has pegged India’s kids’ wear market at 8.3 billion dollars (Rs 550 lakh crores) in 2013, contributing 20 percent of the nation’s apparel market. This figure is expected to grow 22 percent by 2023.

At Flipkart, it’s children’s brands such as Fisher Price and Lego which are most popular followed by UCB, US Polo and Disney. Among toys, mechanical puzzles such as Shengshou Mirror Cube and Rubik’s Cube were the big favourites.
