By the end of financial year, US apparel major Gap will have eight operational stores in India. Two stores were launched in Mumbai and before March two more stores will be launched in Delhi and Bangalore.

Gap is slightly behind schedule as per the plan it had envisaged when it entered the Indian market. When it launched the first store in New Delhi in May 2015, it had announced that it would launch 10 more stores within a year. But the reality has not turned out as per the plan. The reason is availability of space, especially in a city like Mumbai. As Oliver Kaye, CEO, Gap, says, negotiating for real estate is taking time and that the Gap store was opened in Phoenix at Lower Parel. It would have been easier for the company had it been looking at small format stores of 3-4,000 square feet but it is keen on 6,000 square feet stores. The store at Oberoi Mall in Mumbai’s Goregaon will be spread out over 6,000 squre feet area while in Inifiniti Mall, Malad, the store is spread out over 8,000 square feet area. In Noida, Gap will launch a 9,500 squre feet large store while at Phoenix Marketcity in Bangalore, it will be 6,000 squre feet.

Presently, Gap has four operations stores in the country at Select Citywalk, Ambience Mall Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, Ambience Mall Gurgaon and Orion Mall at Brigade Gateway, Bengaluru. The company is offering products that are available globally. The products available in the Indian market are sourced globally and hence, are similar.

Gap was founded in San Francisco in 1969 and set up its first international store in London in 1987.
