Pepe Jeans, has filed an application with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) for setting up its own retail stores in India. The firm wants to take advantage of the government’s liberalised policies that allow foreign single brand retailers to sell through their own store as well as franchisee outlets. Pepe Jeans hopes that its plans will help push its omni-channel retail strategy.

The Spain-headquartered firm plans to large format family stores in Indian metros, Tier II and III cities. It plans to increase the number of stores to 450 from the present 200 franchise stores. It is also looking at doubling its sales in India to nearly Rs 1,500 crores in next three years. In keeping with its expansion plans, Pepe Jeans has also made an entry into kids’ wear market and footwear.

India’s denim market is expected at a compound annual growth rate of 15 per cent to reach Rs 27,200 crores by 2018 as stated by a Technopak study.
