One of India’s most prestigious fashion events, the HDIL Couture Week India is to start

in less than a fortnight. And the buzz is that Kolkata-based designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee would be opening the event with his collection. Fashion Design Council of India’s (FDCI) President Sunil Sethi was not available to verify the information but the news about Sabya opening the show is in line with his agenda to break pre-established notions about the event.

Sabyasachi says be it any slot, he always stresses on his clothes being the hero. His collection for the show is titled ‘Aparajito’ and is inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s literature and Bengali cinema by the same name.

The young fashion designer from Kolkata has an illustrious record, having graduated from NIFT Kolkata in 1999 with three major awards. Following his graduation and within three months he launched his eponymous label. His designs currently retail in various well-known fashion stores like Carma & Ogaan (New Delhi), Melange & Ensemble (Mumbai), Espee & Intrigue (Kolkata, and Origins and Oorja (Hyderabad). He also has his own stores in Kolkata and Mumbai.

He earned the distinction of being the only Indian designer to showcase at the Milan Fashion Week 2004 and was voted by Asia Inc, a Singapore-based business magazine as one of the 10 most influential Indians in Asia.
