The Northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh would

soon get a premier fashion institute. The Ministry of Textiles has given an in-principle approval for setting up of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) at Sagalee in Papum Pare district of the state.

NIFT is a premier fashion designing, management and technology institute in India, and it would soon be set up in Sagalee to help students from different parts of the region, textiles minister K Sambasiva Rao said during a meeting with Arunachal Chief Minister Nabam Tuki recently.

The decision to set up NIFT is in accordance with the Arunachal government’s policy to establish centres of excellence in the state to impart world-class training to students from the region and boost their employability. During the meeting, various issues related to the development and growth of handloom, sericulture and handicraft sectors in the state were also discussed. Following the meeting, the Central Ministry of Textiles would be sending a team of officials to Arunachal Pradesh to assess the state’s sericulture potential and frame a long-term plan of central assistance to the state.

NIFT was set up in 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. In 2006, NIFT was granted statutory status through an act of Parliament, empowering the Institute to award degrees and other academic distinctions. The institute is a pioneer in envisioning and evolving fashion business education in the country through a network of 15 professionally managed domestic centres.
