Uniqlo, a Japanese casual wear designer, manufacturer

and retailer announced its monthly financial results for the month May 2012. Same-store sales decreased by 10.3 per cent year on year while sales at own stores decreased by 7.3 per cent. Total sales including online sales declined 6.9 per cent.

Despite strong sales during the Golden Week holiday in early May and its campaign to celebrate UNIQLO's 28th anniversary in late May, same-store sales for the whole of May dipped year on year with two fewer Saturday, Sunday and public holidays for shopping compared to the previous year, and cool weather in the middle of month dampening sales of summer garments. The firm closed 2 of its store in this period. Also, the 37 stores that were unable to operate for one week or more following the March 2011 disaster were removed from the same-store total from March 2011.

The company was originally a division of Fast Retailing Co. Ltd. On November 1, 2005, it was restructured as a separate wholly owned subsidiary called Uniqlo Co., Ltd. Uniqlo also operates in China, France, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
