The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Arvind Kejriwal, the new chief minister

of New Delhi, has already made his anti-multi-brand FDI stand clear. However, single-brand as well as multi-brand FDI seekers are not affected by his stand.

Kejriwal believes, FDI in retail will render lakhs of small-scale businessmen jobless with them losing their livelihood. Global retailers for now are playing it safe either by putting their India plans on hold or by not opening stores in New Delhi.

In an open letter written to traders, Kejriwal has said that the VAT system in Delhi has turned into a nightmare for businessmen. Hence they usually bribe government officials in order to save themselves. The tax system needs to be simplified. This is also the foremost point of AAP’s manifesto, which it has promised to implement as soon as the party comes to power. “FDI in retail should have been decided through a referendum. The way the parties had behaved in Parliament was very unfortunate,” he has told the reporters.
