Designer duo David Abraham and Rakesh Thakore’s Sari

Silhouette Collection has been selected by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum as part of its permanent collection. The range would be on display as an iconic representation of contemporary Indian fashion. Abraham and Thakore’s concept behind designing the sari collection was to offer designer saris for contemporary Indian woman not for weddings and parties. And to do this the duo altered certain aspects of it. They cut the sari length from six-and-a-half to four-and-a-half metres, creating less number of pleats and then they teamed it with a designer blouse having appliqué of different motifs, ranging from floral to mobile phones.

Abraham and Thakore are known for their unique creations that are contemporary using traditional design techniques. They not only shortened the sari length but experimented with unusual motifs. For instance, seeing significance of election symbols in contemporary India, they used them as of part of the designs.

Abraham and Thakore are known globally for fashion and accessories in addition to textile products for the home. Creative director David Abraham is focused on reinventing the label each season to keep it contemporary, directional and relevant both in India and overseas while Director Rakesh Thakore is focused on the design and development of hand-woven fabrics. Their first store opened in Delhi in 2002 followed by second at the Courtyard in Mumbai and the third in Bangalore on Vittal Malaya Road in 2005, the latest to join them was launched at the Emporio in Delhi.
