AEPC opens SSC to overcome skilled labour crunch

The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) recently opened a skill development

centre for industrial workers in Gurgaon to tackle the problem of skilled labour crunch faced by the export industry. The Sector Skill Council (SSC), according to the AEPC is the new skill development facility that will train and certify as many as 18 lakh new workers over the next decade, with the support of senior industry representatives and academic trainers.

A number of tasks will be carried out by the SSC all round the year. Skill-gap surveys to determine what are the requirements of specific sectors and how to fulfill these will be among the many responsibilities of those affiliated to the skill centre. “The SSC, in the next ten years would certify over 18 lakh workers, develop 27 trades for competency framework, and 41 accreditation organizations,” said A Sakthivel, Chairman, AEPC who now also holds the chair for the SSC.

Skills sets required in manufacturing segments like apparel, knitwear, hosiery, fashion design, and home furnishing among others will be imparted to those who are enrolled at the SSC.
