Bangladeshi garments create buzz in India

Citing increasing demand for Bangladeshi women’s wear

such as denims, trousers and T-shirts, Indian buyers are showing keen interest in importing garment from Bangladesh following duty free access of 48 textile products to India. Buyers supplying these products to various high-end malls in Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore are witnessing a surge in demand for Bangladeshi women’s clothing.

Buyers are expecting demand to continue rising with festivals like Durga Puja, and Diwali approaching fast. On the other hand garment exports from India to Bangladesh have also increased. Besides western clothing, Punjabi suits and saris got a tremendous response during the recent Eid festival. Exports are further expected to increase significantly in the current financial year following duty free access from Bangladeshi to India of 48 textile products.

According to Export Promotion Bureau of Bangladesh (EPB), exports of formal and non-formal RMG items to India increased to $1.0 billion (Rs 5,567 crores) in FY ’12 from $ 0.45 billion (Rs 2,505 crores) in FY ’11. Meanwhile, the trade gap of Bangladesh with India which stood at $1.99 billion (Rs 11,078 crores) in FY 2007 reached nearly $5 billion (Rs 27,836 crores) in FY ’12, EPB said.
