After dressing international celebs like Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Sienna Mille

and Cate Blanchett, globally acclaimed, India-born designer Bibhu Mohapatra is now looking forward to dressing up Bollywood beauties such as Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone and Kajol. The New York-based designer, a regular at international fashion weeks, made his India debut with a spring/summer collection at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai recently.

Mohapatra closed Day two of LFW with his fast paced show featuring 36 elegant Red Carpet creations and cocktail wear whose inspiration apparently was the unpublished Polaroid’s of Helmut Newton. And Mohapatra proved why he is the much in demand designer for stunning evening ensembles.

Born in Rourkela Orissa, he earned his Masters in Economics from Utah University and then moved into a profession of artistic elegance, studying at FIT, New York, where critics gave him an award for evening wear in 1997. With experience as Design Director for French furrier, he launched his label in 2008. His evening wear is the rage of the western world and admired for its stylish directions.

With international designer brands looking at spreading their footprint in India, Indian designers vie for a space in international market instead of focusing on creating collections for the domestic market. With Mohapatra’s entry into Indian designer wear market, many other Indian designers may take an inspiration to create a niche in their home country.
