Last year it was the men’s fashion week that took place in the Delhi. And this year New Delhi is all set to host

its first ever couture week. Even though the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) is ready with its own couture week, it still has a strong partnership with HDIL, the organization behind the couture week in Mumbai, and endorses their event.

Surprisingly, Delhi is where the money is. It is here that the maximum money is spent on wedding couture, readymade clothing and occasion wear. But despite that, it has taken FDCI almost 11 years to get the project off the ground. The couture week will be a grand event, with only a few designers invited to participate. In fact, there will be only about 10 designers, true couturiers, who will showcase their work over four days. While the dates are still being debated, probably mid-July is when the FDCI plans to organize the week. Over the years, except a handful of designers, the larger lot has not been able to connect with the couture clientele of Delhi. While designers like Gauri and Nainika, Suneet Varma, Gaurav Gupta, Shantanu and Nikhil and Rina Dhaka have made waves in Mumbai, they have not been as successful in Delhi.
