Disney plans to offer fashion for adults

The retail arm of entertainment company, Disney India has decided to venture into adult fashion

category. It plans to increase the contribution of the segment to its total revenue from 7 percent to 20 percent over the next 3 years.

As per a study conducted by Disney India and AC Nielsen, 33 percent males and 42 percent females own graphic and character T-shirts. The top four characters were: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy and Donald. Nearly one-third ranked Mickey Mouse, the official mascot of Disney's parent, the Walt Disney Company as the number one character.

The company will expand its presence in top 50 Indian cities. Meanwhile, Disney has inked a tie up with European menswear brand Celio, which will retail its superhero brands such as Iron Man and Captain America in India. The company has also partnered retail brands such as Zara, Mango, Forever 21 and Gap, among others. In the past two years, it has been selling its apparels and accessories for both kids and adults through online retail outlets such as Myntra and Zovi. The company also partnered with Lakme Fashion Week to create awareness among consumers in the adult fashion segment.

Disney India's fashion business in the kids' segment is witnessing a growth of 30 percent per year. Apart from its popular characters such as Mickey Mouse and Spiderman, Disney India is also trying to promote space opera Star Wars.
