Dutch designer Jan Taminiau, is collaborating with designer

Suneet Varma for a collection. He is known to take inspiration from Indian embroidery and traditional Indian unpolished jewellery since he loves rich Indian culture and traditions. Known for designing garments that have a mix of asymmetrical structure and surface treatment, including weaving techniques, Taminiau was in Delhi recently as a part of the Dutch Fashion initiative by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and the Dutch government. A three-year programme is aimed at facilitating collaborations and interactions between the two countries. The first leg features Taminiau’s collaboration with his Indian counterpart Varma for a collection to be launched at the opening day of Spring/Summer 2013 edition of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) that commences on October 6.

In fact, several times in the past, he has used the famous sari draping and pleating technique in his dresses. Though he does not follow any particular fashion industry, his designs reflect his passion for Indian embroidery, detailing and uncut and unpolished jewellery that were used in ancient India. Apart from being a regular at Paris Fashion Week, Taminiau’s designs have been worn by many celebrities including royals to pop icons.

The 37-year-old designer launched his own fashion label in 2003 and is the first Dutch designer whose creation was worn by Princess Maxima of the Netherlands during the opening of the Mode Biennale exhibition in Arnhem in June 2009. His garments also made it to the wardrobe of Hollywood style icon Lady Gaga – she flaunted his dresses during several public appearances and even in the video ‘You & I’.

Giving some of his dresses the draping and pleating feel, he tries to imbibe his fascination for the technique and aims to achieve it further successfully in his forthcoming creations.
