Traders selling merchandise under fake labels of brands like Calvin Klein, Polo and

Tommy Hilfiger in Chandigarh had to face the music after Romesh Dutt, Director, Speed Search and Security Networks Private Limited (an individual property rights company) in Sector 34 of Chandigarh filed a complaint with Chandigarh police on behalf of Tommy Hilfiger, Polo and Calvin Klein. Police then raided the area and arrested four people selling duplicate clothes of these popular brands.

They found many duplicate denims, shirts, jackets, pullovers and T-shirts with fake logos and stickers of the brands. The racket of such people was causing tremendous losses to the brands as they were selling products in the range of mere Rs 200 to Rs 600. The persons have been booked under various sections of Copyright Act and Trademark Act.

The seizure of fake clothes worth Rs 1 crore shows that the duplicate clothes business has emerged as a multi-million racket, with links even in south India. These were the main places from where wholesalers from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, collect fake garment consignments.
