Bespoke or handmade footwear in Italy costing Rs 60,000

or more and which takes over a year to get into its perfect shape is increasingly finding followers in India. For instance, Sunil Bharti Mittal of Bharti Group could break the deal with Kuwait’s Sheikh Nasser Al Kharafi, the head of the group that owned Zain telecom, since they found common thread of interest in the limited edition pair of Moreschi shoes, that both were donning during their meeting in 2010.

It is said that Italians are so passionate about the art of shoe-making that they treat shoemaking technique as a science and not just a craft. Keeping the amount of attention paid to the quality standards by an Italian shoemaker, Indian premium shoe showrooms are turning to Italian labels to offer the best footwear to its high-profile clients. Now Italian labels such as Moreschi, Aldo Brue, Enrico Bruno and Barett are adorning the shelves of select footwear showrooms in India.

Moreschi and Aldo Brue were both established in 1946 and are patronised by the elite both in Italy and abroad. Kim Jong II used to be a Moreschi loyal and Tom Cruise continues to be one. In India, these brands have a very niche clientele among the well-heeled. Artioli is another brand that sets the benchmark for shoemaking. Artioli shoes sell at 1,000 euros (Rs 60,000) and go all the way to €3,000 (Rs 1.8 lakh).
