The Maharashtra state government has recently given a warning to the National Textile Corporation (NTC)
that no new developments would be allowed if it did not fulfill its promise of giving jobs to former mill workers in its refurbished mills. The NTC is a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the ministry of textiles. It was incorporated in April 1968 for managing the affairs of sick textile undertakings, in the private sector, taken over by the government.Nadeem Khan, the state textile minister has said that an agreement between the State and NTC where the latter had taken the responsibility of providing jobs to former workers of the mills who had been displaced has been disregarded by the Corporation. Khan has issued this warning based on the complaints from the unions and labor representatives that none of their former mill workers have been taken back in the newly renovated mills. He further alleged that NTC had not kept its promise of providing small 300 sq. ft. homes to around 2,000 former NTC mill workers, who are currently living in slums as a part of the rehabilitation scheme.
NTC is currently on the path of revival, with steps being taken to modernize the mills under its supervision in accordance with the rehabilitation scheme approved by Board for Industrial & Financial Reconstruction (BIFR).Over the last four decades NTC has grown into a strong enterprise and with appropriate strategies and their effective implementation, it is well on course to become a world-class integrated textile major. Recently, NTC signed a deal with Rosebys Interiors India, a home decor and lifestyle products group, to retail the latter’s home furnishing products through a NTC stores.
