The fashion industry is not only known for its glamour quotient but it’s also revenue driven
industry with a dash of creativity and brashness. Even the tourism minister Subodh Kant Sahay gave it a leg-up when he said that fashion is creative work and that it ought to be seen as a profession. This was his answer to criticism that he was at a fashion show when the blasts tore Mumbai apart. However, his comments on fashion came in for a lot of positive reaction. As Rina Dhaka, designer said, “It’s unfortunate for the industry and politicians that it has come at a time when there’s a parallel unfortunate event, but I’m proud that he has supported the industry.”Another appreciative comment was from Payal Jain, designer and author of NCERT fashion textbooks: “We in the fashion industry definitely think it is serious business – it is our livelihood. The fraternity employs thousands of people directly and indirectly. Even though people think fashion is just about social dos and five minutes on the ramp, those 19 minutes of our shows require preparations and research for months. We’ve been saying this for 15 years, but finally, someone like him, who has a voice, has also said it. Fashion is not frivolous.”
