Well-renowned fashion designer Neeru Kumar, who shies away from public attention,

will be raising the curtains at the much-awaited Wills India Fashion Week A/W 2011 (WLIFW) to be held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from April 6-12. Kumar has been a fellow member with Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) for nearly a decade and this is her first fashion week. She says for a long time, she didn’t feel the need for it and also her international commitments kept her busy all these years. Interestingly, she attends almost all the fashion weeks of FDCI, but prefers to keep to the corner. However, Sunil Sethi, President, FDCI managed to convince her to participate. The Delhi-based designer is a National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad alumnus, and has a strong presence in the international market of Japan, the US and Europe.

Kumar is considered to be one of the most creative designers in India for hand woven textiles. She has done dedicated work in the field of textiles, in developing, exploring, experimenting and innovating from the vast wealth available in India in terms of diverse skills, materials and references that led her to evolve her own unique brand of textiles and textile products. Her unusual palette of colors draws from the traditional but translates into the contemporary so that the yellow of mustard fields, the colors of the earth, charcoal black, a raging sunset mingle with ease among delicate pinks and cool mint. She showcases her work in 15 museum stores across the world and celebs like Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Renuka Choudhury, Kiran Choudhury, Rekha, Shabana Azmi and Hema Malini are her clients for years.
