The joint efforts of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and City and Industrial Development Corporation
(Cidco), in training youth from NMIA project-affected villages to make them capable of getting a job, have brought in positive results. The training program received good response from the villagers. While the project did not expect people to attend the training program, they were surprised with the 100 percent attendance by large number of people. While 49 women took admission to the dress-making course, 48 of these attended the sessions regularly. About 40 percent of the women attending the training program have shown interest in joining work upon course completion.NIFT is among the premier institutes for fashion and apparel designing run by the government of India and its training program and certificate course is widely accepted across the country. For the people from the villages, NIFT designed five short-term job oriented courses. The courses include dress-making, pattern-making, fashion photography, entrepreneurship and salesman.
While the major part of course fee is being borne by Cidco, the remaining will be taken care of by NIFT. The total fee for the course is Rs 50,000 and NIFT has waived off Rs 20,000 for women attending their courses under special program. Of the Rs 30,000, students will need to pay Rs 3,000 and Cidco will pay the rest. The planning agency decided to provide training programmes after Tata Institute of Social Sciences carried out a survey of 10 villages among the age of group of 18-53 years.
