Premier design institute National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) plans to open its first store
to sell merchandise by its students and alumni. This summer, institute in Taramani will launch ‘The NIFT Shop’ displaying clothes, accessories and artefacts. National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad runs an on-campus store and NIFT has followed a similar format for its store. The 700 square foot outlet will be designed in bright colours. It will also exhibit clothes tailor-made for the disabled, which the students are currently working on. With four disabled persons as their models, the students began this project with NGO Ability Foundation earlier this year.A team of four faculty members will look into product finalization process that are fit to be displayed based on guidelines and will also be in charge of pricing. The NIFT set up by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India in the year 1986, was granted statutory status under the Act of Parliament of India in 2006, empowering the institute to award degrees and other academic distinctions. The Institute is a pioneer in evolving fashion business education in the country through a network of fifteen professionally managed centres at Bangalore, Gandhinagar, New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Shillong, Kangra, Kannur, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Jodhpur, Patna and Raebareli.
