The traditional and ancient handloom saris from Paithan town of Aurangabad in Maharashtra are

well-recognized for their exquisite designs and unique quality. These handloom saris, which are known as Paithani, have been reckoned as royal attire and have been recognized as national treasures for their stunning artwork and sheer fabric quality that gives them a distinctive look.

But now imitation of such a glorious pattern of saris in other parts of the country is threatening the livelihood of weavers of this traditional garb. Also, due to the fake products, buyers are facing difficulties in sourcing the original, as differentiating the fake from the original is confusing. Considering this, the Indian government has offered Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) to this traditional attire. This was done with the initiative of a forum of handloom weavers. This measure has put a restriction on unscrupulous traders manufacturing and selling fake Paithani saris. An official patent would be acquired by the Pratishthan Weavers Association of Aurangabad for these authentic saris. Holding this patent, weavers of Paithani saris would be able receive best prices for their products in local as well as international markets.
