Pakistani designs create a stir in the capital

Indian designers maybe making waves across the globe, but when designs made in Pakistan travel to India,
they quickly fly off the shelves. Recently, Pakistani designers exhibited their collections of suits, embroidered salwar-kameez and colourful lehengas at Dilli Haat in New Delhi, over a fortnight, and got a tremendous response.A unique feature of Pakistani designs is its articulate finishing as well as complex yet beautiful embroidery on smooth fabric. When such elegant pieces of garments are exhibited at the annual India International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan, they witness highest sales as well as footfall. Now, such ensembles are available through the year at the Pakistan Fashion Design Council, ‘The Boulevard’ in Delhi’s South Extension.
The man behind getting Pakistani designer wear to the country is Delhi-based entrepreneur Sahibjit Singh Bindra. A graduate from a fashion design institute in Milan, two years back Singh decided to provide a platform for Pakistan-based designers. While keeping the sour relations, both the countries have been sharing since partition, it was not easy to fulfill the dream of retailing Pakistani designs in India. But Singh says, since the store is in the heart of New Delhi, risk is there but it is the government’s responsibility to provide security to PFDC in case there is an emergency or threat.
