is busy packing cartons of cargo shorts these days. The four-year-old company recently packed and sent a consignment of 8,000 cargo shorts from Thiruvananthapuram to Brazil. And it’s all set to send the next one on July 31. Stylishly done cargo shorts in olive and tan are made for Walmart, the American retail giant.Simultaneously, the company is working on check print shirts for one of the leading retailers in India, while another group of workers are working on a consignment for Rovietex, a Brazilian retailer. The company’s Managing Director, Usha Umesh’s journey is an incredible one. From being a teacher of economics doing her post-doctoral research in industrial economics in CUSAT, Kochi four years ago to the MD of Poojaa Garments in Kinfra Park, she has learnt the gimmicks of the trade.
Her business has provided a living to 600 employees – 450 at Kinfra and 150 at a factory in Karakonam. She makes sure that rigorous quality checks are carried out at different stages in the manufacturing process to prevent errors and sub-standard work. She sources the fabric from Tirupur, Salem and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and from Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi as per the client requirements. With a one crore turnover last quarter, Usha Ramesh has chalked out big plans to take her company on the next level of success.
