Luggage major Samsonite, which has acquired

American brands High Sierra and Hartmann is looking at introducing these labels in India by mid next year. While Hartmann’s portfolio comprises luxury luggage, High Sierra’s range extends to categories such as T-shirts, backpacks, flip flops, adventure luggage among others. The company is looking at opening 50 points of sale for High Sierra next year.

Aiming at repositioning itself as high-end luxury brand, Samsonite feels that both these brands will fulfil its aim of positioning itself as a lifestyle brand rather than just a luggage-only brand. Samsonite has a global turnover of $1.6 billion (Rs 8,900 crores), and the Indian and West Asian market contribute about 7.5 per cent to its global turnover. Its brands include Samsonite Black Label at the luxury end, Samsonite and affordable brand American Tourister.

After discontinuing its licensing agreement with Timberland and Lacoste, the company plans to focus on its own brand range. It is also looking at firming up retail presence in smaller towns with American Tourister.

Globally, Samsonite posted record first-half sales, boosted by strong global travel demand as well as growth in Asia and North America. Its profits for six months upto June 30 jumped 263 per cent to $90.1 million (Rs 501 crores), up from $24.8 million (Rs 137 crores) during the same period a year ago. Sales in Asia grew 21.3 per cent in the first half, driven by a “growing market of new potential customers among emerging middle class consumers keen on travel and eager for quality, branded luggage,” Samsonite said.
