Models wearing handloom attires walked the ramp to mark the handloom week at a unique

fashion show in Shillong. It may be noted that Shillong is the fashion hub of Meghalaya. The show called ‘The Symphony of Weaves -- the Handlooms Ensemble’ was organized by the state’s textile department. A total of 80 garments were displayed on the ramp during the shows. The main aim for organizing such a show was to make handloom creations popular especially among the younger generation. Another reason behind the fashion week was to send a message across the country that the people in Shillong are very fashionable.

The collection was the creation of fashion designer Meghna Rai Medhi and students of NIFT from all over the state. According to Medhi, if the youngsters of Shillong take to handlooms, then they can send signals to other parts of the state.

Fashion weeks and ramp shows such as these are meant to give a fillip to the handloom sector, the second largest employer in the country, providing jobs to 6.5 million people.
