A huge mall will be opening this July at New Delhi’s

glitzy Indira Gandhi domestic-cum-international terminal (T3). Some of the world’s top brands have already booked their space here. Apart from well-known Indian brands, eateries and service providers, global biggies like Versace, WH Smith, Swarovski and Hagen Daz are opening their stores. Moreover, the international side of the terminal will have the biggest duty-free area among all airports in India.

In terms of size, most malls will pale in comparison to the retail area of T3. It will have 247 retail units and a 100-room hotel. It will be India’s biggest airport retail area with a space of over 30,000 sq. mt. In comparison, an average three to four storey mall has a retail space of 20-25,000 sq. mt.

The GMR-led airport consortium will follow a business model in which there’s greater stress on revenue sharing rather than just rentals. Earlier, it had given duty-free and other retail outlets at IGI for hefty rentals to retails. Many of these eventually shut down or sought a reduction in the fixed charge.
