Due to the break up of JV Bharti Enterprises and Walmart, the latter has decided to lay off 100 to 150 mid-level

to senior employees in India. The next couple of days will see several employees being laid off. Walmart India has around 1,100 employees and will have to cut its workforce due to its expansion plans being on hold. Anticipating major expansion plans, Walmart had hired many employees however, it has decided to lay off the extra workforce as of now.

At present Walmart India has 20 Best Price Modern wholesale units in the country. It had a 50:50 joint venture with Bharti Enterprises, which was called off last October. The company is also undergoing major changes in its top level management overseas and in the country as well.

Despite the fact that there are several multi-brand retail players in India, Walmart is still in no position to find a new partner for the front end retail segment. After its break-up with Bharti, Walmart halted expansion of its cash-and-carry stores in India until 2015.
