New products on the anvil
Carat makes only white shirts in sober patterns. “White shirts enjoy wide popularity because they can be worn on any occasion. We offer a wide range of shirts in whites under formal and semi-formal category. We make slim fits for youngsters and shirts in thicker fabric for older men with permanent starch,” explains Gala.
The MRPs are between Rs 650 to Rs 2,000 and Gala says the brand focuses on quality rather than price. “We are concerned about the way yarn is dyed and use the best buttons and threads. We use branded three plys to ensure that quality standards are maintained,” he adds.
Carat now plans to introduce white trousers and white T-shirts. Trousers would be launched by Diwali while T-shirts will hit the market in a year’s time. For Autumn/Winter, the brand has focused on a young audience. It will introduce new patterns having semi-cutaway collars for both regular and party wear. Carat would use pure linens.
Expanding retail reach
Carat is with 300 to 400 MBOs in five states. Maharashtra gives the most sales followed by Karnataka and the north especially Delhi. “Next, we want to venture into Gujarat and Rajasthan. Madhya Pradesh and Kolkata too offer good opportunities. In two years, we hope to cover the whole of India. Every year, our MBO growth is 30 to 40 percent. After Diwali, we will open exclusive stores starting with a store in Mumbai. We also plan to launch our range online,” Gala observes.
Launched in 1998, the name Carat is inspired from carat, which is a hallmark of purity. The company has a factory at Bhiwandi with a capacity of producing 500 to 600 pieces a day. Summing up, he says, “For me seasons don’t really matter. The only difference is that in winter, full sleeves sell and half sleeves pick up in summer. Styles and fashion element remain unchanged except around the festive and wedding season.”
