With rising demand for denims in the domestic market and an increased focus on catering to it, the Indian denim industry expects the production capacity to rise by 100 million meters by next year. According to the Textile Association of India (TAI),

the denim manufacturing capacity, which stands at 600-650 million meters per annum, is set to witness an addition by another 100 million meters wherein 70 per cent focus will be on the domestic market. TAI, which is conducting a two-day `International Conference on Denim’ on October 29-30, 2010 in Ahmedabad, feels the capacity addition will also boost the per capita denim consumption in India which currently stands at 0.30 meters per annum.

Experts point out that the size of the denim market in India is about 65-70 million pairs. It’s a large structured industry growing at about 15-20 per cent a year. No wonder, every year numerous new players are jumping into the denim space with an array of products while many existing apparel players are expanding their product line to denims. Chetan Shah, MD, Pepe Jeans explains, “The total size of the denim market in India is estimated at around Rs 2,000 crores and is growing at the rate of 10- 15 per cent per year. In fact, Pepe Jeans itself contributes around 25 per cent in the premium jeans and casual wear market.” Moreover, the jeanswear segment is divided according to the price brand and experts say that the growth rate of premium and super premium is higher than the other segments.

Meanwhile, the international conference on denims will focus on promotion of denim and will include deliberations on subjects such as: strategic issues in managing global denim business, global brands entry into emerging Indian market, India’s potential in the international market for denim and jeans vis-a-vis China, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, marketing strategies for Indian denim players to compete, branding and retailing of denim among others. The two-day event will be attended by major Indian and global denim companies from the entire value chain. It will provide a unique opportunity to meet, learn, develop/exchange ideas for expanding Indian denim business. TAI expects around 350 participants to attend the two-day international conference which is being held at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A).

The conference will witness participation from the likes of Arvind, Aarvee Denims, Malwa Group, Mafatlal Denim, Chiripal Group, Raymond UCO Denim, Dystar and Kunal Organics, among others.
