India-born designer Bibhu Mohapatra, who after working for a decade as design director at J Mendel, launched his collection in 2009. Mohapatra presented his polished styles like diamond-print patterns and slim-cut pants for the first time on runway at Lincoln Center, New York. Influenced by the 1930’s, he also showcased several eveningwear pieces, such as a beaded dress with feather trim and laser-cut leather cocktail dress.
Taking inspiration from photographer Man Ray his fence-link motif, designed in prints and applique techniques and his gowns, fur stoles fastened with jewel-dripping brooches and sky-high, mirrored wedges garnered enough attention from the high-heeled audience.
And though the designer's collection is already in Bergdorf Goodman, executives from Neiman Marcus were present during his show. Fashion critics adored his designs and his strategy of being seen at select retailers. As Susan Scafidi, Academic Director at Fordham University's Fashion Law Institute comments, “Some designers just mail it in, but Mohapatra follows his own guidelines but he's opted for slow growth—he doesn't want to be in every door. Such a business strategy could be risky in the immediate future, as it limits his potential exposure, but has a better chance of success long-term because he will have the most suitable partners.”
