Designer Suneet Varma’s collection at the recent Delhi Couture Week triggered off a controversy as he surpassed all boundaries of creative imagination with his Kamasutra collection. He conceptualized and replicated various aspects of the celebrated Hindu text on sex. The show area had bells hung from the ceiling, and red drapes in the background, giving it an almost rustic and romantic look and feel. The show began on a sensual note with two dancers displaying passionate dance moves under water amidst layers of smoke in the backdrop. It sure invested a new dimension to the grandeur of couture.
His mesmerizing collection had long drapes of kurtas and saris embellished with kundan work embroidery, layers of crushed silk flow with crystal beading and narrow trousers. His designing sensibility came into full view when models Tinu Verghese, Pia Trivedi and Bruna Abdullah walked in, bathed in accents of nude, lightweight gorgette contrasting in ethereal veils and saris. Colors like deep reds, oranges and fuschias romanced with zardozi and mirror work. Giving the pale nude shades company were pearl and aari embroidery. From the sensual saris to the conservative anarkalis, from the majestic lehengas to structured jackets over them, the collection celebrated the undertone of Indian bridal wear. Metallic bras became the language of the seductress who walked the ramp in an otherwise exquisite collection.
