Bollywood’s favourite designer Manish Malhotra added a Punjabi flavour to the ramp at the Wills Indian Fashion Week with newbies like Esha Gupta, Sidharth Malhotra and Jacqueline Fernandez flaunting his creations. Titled ‘Threads of Emotion’, Malhotra celebrated the magic and heritage of the Phulkari embroidery from his native state-Punjab in the collection.

While hit Punjabi songs –‘Jugni’ and ‘Mast Kalandar’ played in the background, models sashayed down the runway in traditional ‘Phulkari’ and ‘Bagh’ embroidery work with a modern touch. Dressed in a black bandhgala with embroidered collar and white patiala, Sidharth Malhotra wowed the audience. While Delhi girl Esha Gupta wore a black net embroidered sari with a heavy red underskirt, Jacqueline Fernandez rocked a fully embroidered colourful long jacket teamed with white and orange lehenga. The collection also featured saris, anarkalis, floor length anarkalis and angrakhas. For men there were bandhgalas, salwars teamed with colourful turbans and embroidered shawls.

The prime fabrics used were georgette, net, raw silk and a lot of texture work. Weaves of Phulkari were spun into his signature styles in autumn colours like rich mustard yellow, navy blue, deep rust, earthy olive and intense red.

The designer has been promoting Indian craftsmanship throughout the world. Since last two years, he has been promoting Kashmiri thread and zari work and chikankari work from Mizwan, a small village in UP.
