Famous fashion designer Ritu Beri is the new advisor for khadi promotion KVIC. She will now be responsible to make it a global fabric. Beri, a graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, said that she would work hard to make it a fabric to reckon with.

This move comes soon after the news of khadi being considered as Friday dressing for government employees. Already Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emerged as the brand ambassador for khadi. The government is trying to develop Khadi Gramudyog cottage industry across villages with the aim of providing employment and empowering rural families.

KVIC will be entering into a tie-up with Fabindia and Raymond to retail high-end khadi at some outlets. The KVIC is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament. In April 1957, it took over the work of former All India Khadi and Village Industries Board. The KVIC is charged with the planning, promotion, organisation and implementation of programmes for the development of khadi and other village industries in the rural areas in co-ordination with other agencies engaged in rural development wherever necessary.
