Massimo Dutti lands in New York with SoHo store and Patti Smith exhibition
Madrid – Seven years after closing its Fifth Avenue store, Massimo Dutti, the Inditex group’s most exclusive fashion chain, returns to New York with the opening of a new flagship store. The brand has launched the space in New York’s sophisticated and vibrant SoHo neighbourhood, celebrating the occasion with an independent photography exhibition dedicated to American singer-songwriter Patti Smith.
Located at 575 Broadway, with entrances from both Broadway and parallel Mercer Street, Massimo Dutti’s new New York store sits right in the heart of SoHo. The neighbourhood is particularly renowned and coveted for its vibrant, cosmopolitan urban scene, featuring numerous restaurants, art galleries and bustling shopping streets where the Inditex group’s premium chain has now landed. The brand previously held a permanent brick and mortar retail presence in New York after moving into 689 Fifth Avenue in October 2012. That opening marked the chain’s debut in the US market. However, in early 2019, the retailer began closing all of its physical stores across the US. The chain ceased operating offline in the market until its return in late 2024 with the opening of its new first store in the country at Miami’s Aventura Mall. Building on that location, Massimo Dutti continues to expand its presence in the US with this second store, which is its first in New York.
Set in one of SoHo’s most iconic buildings, the store occupies the retail space previously held by & Other Stories, one of the fashion chains owned by the H&M Group. From this location, Massimo Dutti has begun retailing its menswear and womenswear collections. The brand now competes directly with fashion houses and labels operating in this same area of New York’s SoHo, including Prada; Boss; Aritzia; Banana Republic; Lacoste; and Zara, the Inditex group’s leading fashion chain by turnover, which operates at 503 Broadway. This concentration of retail operators highlights the prominent commercial profile of this specific stretch of the street from which Massimo Dutti has returned to New York’s brick and mortar retail scene.
Featuring Massimo Dutti’s latest store concept
Inside 575 Broadway, Massimo Dutti’s in-house architecture and interior design team has executed a carefully considered refurbishment project to implement the brand’s latest store concept. According to the chain’s management, this model has so far only been introduced in the US, first at the Miami store and now in New York.
In line with the atmosphere and experience created at the Florida location, Massimo Dutti’s new New York store preserves and highlights the building’s architectural features. Most notable among these are the original exposed cast-iron columns, located both inside and on the facade of the property. These details have been deliberately enhanced with wooden flooring and minimalist display units that make them stand out alongside the main focal point of the space: Massimo Dutti’s menswear and womenswear offering.
“Located at 575 Broadway, in one of SoHo’s most characteristic buildings, the new flagship preserves key elements of the neighbourhood’s architectural heritage,” featuring a “series of interconnected rooms with high ceilings and original exposed cast-iron columns, both inside and at the entrances,” which pay “tribute to the area’s commercial and industrial history.” These features have been placed in dialogue with “wooden floors” and “clean-lined display units” that “are combined with contemporary furniture and a selection of furniture and antiques curated by the brand in New York.” Together, all of these elements “create a harmonious space to showcase the Woman and Man collections” within the atmosphere of Massimo Dutti’s “latest store concept, previously only seen in the US at its sole store in the country in Miami.”
In-store and omnichannel services for elevated and personalised shopping experience
Beyond its setting and product offering, the shopping experience at Massimo Dutti’s new New York store is complemented by a range of experiential and omnichannel services. Through these solutions, the chain aims to deliver an elevated retail experience. In keeping with company standards, the store also incorporates the Inditex group’s latest energy-efficiency measures, enabling better resource management in terms of climate control and energy consumption.
Key services available to customers include the “Scan&Shop” feature, which allows shoppers to scan items in-store to view product information, add them to their online basket and choose their preferred delivery location. Customers can also use the “Reserve in Store” option to reserve items via the Massimo Dutti mobile app for in-store collection within 24 hours. Additionally, shoppers can ask store staff to place online orders for out-of-stock items for collection within 48 hours. The store also offers a “Style Advisor” service, enabling customers to book an appointment with a personal shopper for a tailored experience that includes access to a private fitting room and bespoke garment and accessory recommendations.
Patti Smith exhibition
To accompany and celebrate its return to the New York scene, Massimo Dutti has organised a photography exhibition in the city dedicated to the work of American artist Steven Sebring, featuring a collection of his previously unpublished photographs of Smith. Titled “Patti Smith by Steven Sebring”, the exhibition runs at 260 Bowery from October 17 to 25, a space that both Sebring and Smith have already visited.
“Arriving in New York means entering a conversation that has been unfolding for generations,” notes the fashion chain’s management. Aiming to rejoin that dialogue “on the occasion of the opening of our new flagship store at 575 Broadway in SoHo, our first approach to the city begins through culture” with “‘Patti Smith by Steven Sebring’, an exhibition curated by Massimo Dutti.” The showcase “brings together unpublished photographs and offers an intimate perspective of Patti Smith through her performances, travels and off-stage moments,” drawing from the intimate body of work on the singer that the American photographer and filmmaker Sebring began developing after the two met around 1995.
At the “essence” of that relationship “lies the trust that allows a shared story to become a visual language,” the fashion chain adds regarding the exhibition dedicated to the singer-songwriter and the city that never sleeps. “Patti Smith’s voice and vision are woven into New York’s cultural identity,” and “marking our arrival” in the city “with this exhibition reflects Massimo Dutti’s desire to connect with the city through the people and creative relationships that have helped shape it.” With this in mind, the brand commissioned the photographer and filmmaker to create the exhibition from his personal archive. The showcase not only presents these “unpublished images of Patti Smith” but also “explores New York’s cultural legacy.” Building on this premise, Massimo Dutti will seek to develop “a broader cultural project conceived in dialogue with New York,” launched alongside both the Broadway store opening and the exhibition. The brand plans to shape this cultural initiative “through collaborations with creative figures linked to the city.” This approach will combine “photography, fashion, publishing, architecture and contemporary culture to explore the references that have shaped its own identity.”
New opening for new phase of expansion
Founded in Barcelona in 1985 and acquired by Inditex between 1991 and 1995, Massimo Dutti currently operates in 79 markets across Europe, the Americas and Asia. At the close of Inditex’s 2025 full financial year, the brand’s retail network comprised a total of 511 points-of-sale. Although this figure was 17 stores fewer than the 528 locations recorded at the end of the 2024 financial year, Massimo Dutti ended the 2025 fiscal year with annual sales of 2.02 billion euros (+3.01 percent year-over-year). In percentage and YoY terms, turnover has surged in the first half of 2026, which the chain closed with revenue of 988 million euros (+10.39 percent).
Against this backdrop, Inditex is keeping its premium fashion chain focused on a measured phase of growth and consolidation, accelerating over recent months with prominent openings across the globe. Through this wave of new stores, Massimo Dutti made its debut in Denmark with its first store in Copenhagen in early July. The brand has also strengthened its presence in several key markets with openings in South Korea, in Seoul’s Hannam neighbourhood; in Mexico, with a store in Los Cabos; and in Italy, with new flagship stores in Rome and Milan. Following the addition of this second US store and first in New York, the chain has confirmed plans to open a new flagship store in Shanghai.
