Neeta Lulla adds more traditional Indian weaves

Neeta Lulla, who recently showed her “Edwardian Elegante” collection at Bengaluru Fashion Week, is making her label increasingly sustainable by adding in more traditional Indian weaves.

The Mumbai based couture and ready-to-wear designer now uses traditional Indian textiles for 60 percent of her collections, increasing the sustainable focus of her brand. Lulla has used these textiles for her traditional fabric collections but is now using the textiles increasingly in her other collections too, including her bridal wear line. This move is in line with the Indian government’s “Make in India” campaign and a wider trend of Indian designers embracing India’s rich textile heritage whilst also stepping into more sustainable design.

Lulla says as a designer, she would show her heritage and culture collections. Her latest collection ‘Edwardian Elegante’ features muted, vintage colours that go into vibrant colours. It has been contemporised to fit the woman of today having a destination wedding and would like to wear something different with a bit of yesteryear feel but is still stylised. By mixing traditional Indian textiles with Edwardian tailoring, Lulla is pushing the boundaries of traditional textiles beyond their usual use and proving their flexibility.
