Finally, Tata Group has taken the plunge. It has decided to enter the growing e-commerce business with the launch of CLiQ, an online marketplace which will open its doors to the public on May 27. It initially compliment their brick and mortar stores but will soon launch their own web-specific products. CLiQ will focus on apparels, footwear and electronics products initially.

A new business entity has been created called Tata Unistore under which CLiQ will operate. Tata Group has been working on this concept since 2014. What is interesting in the logo is the fact that the Q represents a magnifying glass – a visual representation of the brand’s focus on curating only the best brands and products. It is expected to create some ripples in the market. The e-commerce venture will be simultaneously launched on mobile, apps besides desktop website. It is believed that this is the first instance when a major e-commerce marketplace has been launched on all the platforms from day 1.

Last month, Reliance Industries had launched their apparel portal ajio.com and earlier Aditya Birla Group launched apparel specific portal abof.com. In a personal capacity, Ratan Tata had invested in more than 10 start-ups which include several e-commerce ventures such as Paytm, Snapdeal and Bluestone.
