It’s not often that interlinings in an apparel draw much attention. It’s never in our thoughts when buying clothes or even considered for a serious dekko. As a result, often expensive clothes get spoiled because of poor quality interlining. This is where homegrown company specialising in interlinings, Godolo & Godolo comes in. Since its beginning in 1989, it has revolutionised the Indian trim industry and is looking at continuing to do so.

Little details matter most

A good interlining is very important for all clothes – shirts, trousers and dresses. For Godolo & Godolo, quality matters and that is why all their interlinings are imported. They use 100 per cent American cotton as it is the best. It doesn’t have issues of dirt and guarantees uniformity in fusing. The nominated bond strength for interlinings should be nothing less than 22 newtons and this is ensured by a thorough checking of each and every shipment. Good interlinings don’t face discolour. Interlinings turn yellow because of bad finish or a bad handfeel. It’s important to get fabrics tested before fusing interlinings. Fabrics with very high shrinkage are bound to create problem for interlining.

Sandip Kapoor, Director, Gondolo & Gondolo, suggests, “Another factor to be considered is the sensitivity of the fabric to the fusing. If you use very sensitive fabrics like polyester, it’s better to get the fabrics tested for heat. It is better to make the collars and cuffs in advance to get an idea of how they will sit on the shirt. It will save you a lot of pain. If you are doing a single collar or a double collar, you can make some shapes, some options with different interlinings. You can have a fairly good idea of how the placket will feel and behave.”

It’s imported versus domestic

The major difference between imported and domestic interlining lie in the performance. A good imported interlining can withstand at least 50 washes because it uses a high density polyethylene coating. Once such an interlining fuses, it gives a very good performance. It may even outlast the garment. When it comes to strength, Syken interlining would be a minimum of 22 while a domestic brand would be in the region of 12 or 13. Godolo & Godolo does a 50-wash test for interlining. Of late, there have been new developments in wrinkle free garments which need very high temperature washing. For such a garment, Godolo & Godolo provides a high temperature series that can withstand high temperature washes.

Godolo & Godolo began operations in 1989 and through a small team gradually spread out to all main cities in India and Bangladesh. It has been the first company in India to offer a range of high quality micro non-woven interlinings, introduce Europe’s fourth generation WJ Technology for the first time in India, weftline, cold water soluble embroidery backing among a host of other technologies.
