The Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society or Co-optex Thanjavur region has set a sales target of Rs 4.31 crore. The scheme was launched at the Co-optex Vairam showroom recently. That apart, Co-optex has also set a target of Rs 5 crore through sale of its ‘cool comfort’ saris through 50 exhibitions which will be held across the country by July this year.
Under the buy two get one free scheme, goods estimated at Rs 2.51 crore were sold at Thanjavur region last year. In Thanjavur district, Co-optex sold goods worth Rs 85.23 lakh last year when the target was to sell Rs 1.11 crore.
During the present sale, special products from Coimbatore, Madurai and Salem regions with intricate weaves and dyed in natural colours will be available. Pretty Negamam saris and Kooraninadu saris of the Mayiladuthurai region have been popular with customers just as Jayakarthika saris have been. Hundred per cent cotton shirts and 100 per cent silk shirts have also been in demand among male customers. For the exhibition, Co-optex has sourced 47,000 saris from its 12 cotton clusters across the state. And out of this, 12,000 saris were procured from the Madurai region. Also, to contemporise the saris, Co-optex roped in young designers from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, to produce a series of colours for pan-India appeal.
