Harvey Nichols creditors face uncertain recovery after administration

The main trading company of British department store Harvey Nichols owed an estimated 270.5 million pounds to unsecured creditors when it entered administration last month, with creditors expected to recover only a fraction of the money owed, according to a report from administrators FTI Consulting filed with the UK's Companies House.

The administrators said returns to unsecured creditors are currently uncertain, with the outcome depending on the individual entity. Preferential creditors, meanwhile, are expected to recover the amounts owed to them in full.

The estimated financial position shows a 234.9 million pounds shortfall to unsecured creditors at Harvey Nichols and Company, the group's main trading entity. The administrators also said there would be no return to shareholders because of the material shortfall to creditors.

The creditor list includes a number of notable fashion and beauty brands, including Victoria Beckham, Barbour, Adidas, Hugo Boss and Charlotte Tilbury, alongside hundreds of other suppliers and businesses.

FTI said the group had experienced significant trading difficulties in recent years, including the impact of the pandemic, accelerated digital competition and a decline in high street footfall. The removal of VAT refunds for international tourists from January 2021 also contributed to a reduction in visits from affluent customers.

Trading reportedly continued to deteriorate despite a new management team and transformation plan, while additional shareholder funding was no longer available, leading to a formal sale process.

Elsewhere, the report confirms that Frasers Group acquired Harvey Nichols’ business and assets for 43.25 million pounds, including its retail estate, intellectual property, stock and other assets. The administrators said the transaction, which is said to have saved 1,160 jobs, represented the best available outcome for creditors and preserved the business and its brand.
