iShippo.co, the online marketplace dedicated to promoting ethnic, culture and heritage through handcrafted products, has joined hands with Development Commissioner Handloom of the Union ministry of textiles. Through this partnership, iShippo will educate, train and empower weavers to sell their products on the iShippo online portal.
To begin with, iShippo will engage with weavers in Bagalkot and other cluster hubs in Karnataka. The product will carry government certifications India ‘Handloom Brand’ and ‘Handloom Mark’. With the help of the textile ministry, iShippo will help the weavers to be technologically advanced as well as turn them into entrepreneurs, initiate capacity building of the artisan community and ensure self-sustainability of clusters. As Karma Bhutia, Founder and CEO, iShippo.com says, this initiative will literally bring the world at the doorstep of the weavers. An idea, he explains, can be taken from design to finished goods and be delivered in to the hands of buyers in one seamless transaction.
It is the textile ministry’s priority to promote marketing through e-commerce. In fact, it is the government’s initiative to reposition premium and good quality handloom products for the benefit of consumers as well as weavers. The government is promoting e-marketing of genuine and authentic handloom products so as to reduce intermediaries and increase the gains both for consumers and weavers.
US-based TechNews Today recognised iShippo as one of the top five e-commerce start-ups to look out for in 2016. The portal is a marketplace where people from all over the world connect both offline and online to make, sell and buy handcrafted goods. Its mission is to connect local artisans with designers and buyers from across the world.
