Madura Fashion and Lifestyle has apologised to Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) for using its trade name ‘Khadi’ without permission to promote a new range of apparel under its brand Peter England. The Aditya Birla Group’s company has since removed the word ‘Khadi’ from all its promotions.

Madura acknowledged the national importance that is attached to the Khadi mark and khadi products. In its reply to the notice served by KVIC to the company, Madura apologised for being ignorant with regard to the ‘requirement of obtaining Khadi mark registration in accordance with the procedures prescribed under Khadi Mark Regulations, 2013’. KVIC had sent the company a legal notice asking it to stop using the trade name Khadi without its permission and stop its unauthorised use. The company also said that it stopped production of any more merchandise under ‘Khadi’ name and debranded its merchandise that were under production.

The legal notice was sent after an ad appeared in newspapers last month to promote Khadi branded apparel under the brand name Peter England.
