Six renowned fashion designers from India and Pakistan were brought together by the Woolmark Company in Mumbai to showcase their designs for the upcoming season. These designs were inspired by the lightweight, luxurious Merino wool.

Designers included Nachiket Barve, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Rahul Mishra, Troy Costa, Gaurav Jai Gupta and Pakistani designer Omar Farooq. Barve’s collection, called Tulimania, was inspired by the delicate flower. He reimagined the fabric for eveningwear and occasion wear, presenting it in such a way that it was glamorous but sensual too. Gupta’s collection was an array of blend. Hand-woven fabrics were developed in merino wool, monofilament silks, cotton, zari and stainless steel. The collection Mumushka had separates for both women and men along with saris. Mishra’s collection was inspired by metamorphosis in life. Called Fourth Dimension, the collection used Merino yarn to revisit the past in a world ruled by technology. The idea was to preserve the craftsmanship of the skilled artisan.

Singh presented a collection that highlighted the fluidity, drapability and versatility of Merino wool. His collection had oversized silhouettes, traditional Indian costume with a modern twist and tunics in reds and orange. Troy Costa’s collection was inspired by La Bella Figura (good impression). It had structured silhouettes of bespoke tailoring. Farooq’s collection Oriental Opulence had embroideries, jacquards, knitting, embellishments etc. so as to bring traditional to contemporary fashion.

In an interesting twist, the Designer Collaboration Showcase also focused on the Make in India concept, tracing the journey of Australian Merino wool to the weavers, manufacturers, brands and designers in India – from farm to fashion.
