The British Fashion Council (BFC) has named Yohji Yamamoto as the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award at The Fashion Awards 2026, honouring his contribution to the global fashion industry and his lasting influence on contemporary design.
The ceremony will take place on November 30 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The BFC announced the news on Wednesday, 28 October.
The award recognises Yamamoto’s design language, which the BFC describes as defined by innovation, craftsmanship and artistic integrity. The council pointed to his tailoring and his radical reimagining of womenswear, as well as an avant-garde approach that has consistently challenged convention and widened what fashion can express creatively.
The BFC said the label bearing his name and the wider Yohji Yamamoto fashion house have built a legacy that has influenced generations of designers, shaping the intersection of fashion, art and culture.
“Few designers have changed the way we think about clothes as profoundly as Mr. Yamamoto,” said Laura Weir, chief executive of the British Fashion Council. “His work has always challenged convention while remaining deeply rooted in craft, precision and an uncompromising creative vision. For generations of people around the world, he has shown that fashion can be simultaneously intellectual, emotional and deeply human. It is a privilege to recognise his extraordinary contribution to our industry at The Fashion Awards 2026.”
The Outstanding Achievement Award is given to a British or international designer whose contribution has had a lasting impact on the global industry and whose career has consistently shaped and redefined fashion through innovation, creativity and originality. Previous recipients include Tom Ford, Valentino, Patagonia’s Yvon Chouinard, Giorgio Armani, Miuccia Prada, Ralph Lauren and Karl Lagerfeld.
