Anaka Narayan was an economic analyst before pursuing her passion for designing clothes. After spending a few years as an analyst in the US, she decided to move back to her home-town Chennai, where she launched her label – Brass Tracks in 2007. Eight years on, she now plans to expand her presence with a store in Bangalore in the next couple of months. Also on her radar is an expansion of her offerings, which would now fall under three different segments: classic, fashion and experimental.

Narayan believes in creating ensembles appealing to a modern woman yet with traditional Indian fabrics like ikat, ajrakh or Bengal cotton. The range boats of cowl-necked maxis with asymmetrical hems, shift dresses, cropped pants in these rich weaves from different states. To follow her love for designing, Narayan decided to begin from scratch, which led her to doing a four-month course in pattern making with a professor from design institute, NIFT.

The latest resort collection from Brass Tracks is inspired by her recent trip to Japan, where she learnt Boro technique, a concept of recycling and reusing precious textiles in a patchwork style. The line consists of almost 35 different styles including maxis, tops, skirts, trousers and dresses. The company also retails online to cater to the demand coming from clients across the globe. Sales of her label are driven by customers from Mumbai, Bangalore, US, Singapore and Australia. Jill Lindsey, a store in Brooklyn also stocks her designs.
