On October 15, 2015, Metro Cash & Carry opened the doors to its second wholesale outlet in Delhi’s Seelampur area. This new wholesale outlet has opened a place earlier occupied by French retailer Carrefour’s store. This is Metro’s 19th outlet in the country. The company plans to increase the number of its outlets to 50 by 2020.
The German wholesaler had opened its first store in Delhi in Shahdara in 2012. The new store is spread across 78,000 square feet and has been developed with an investment of Rs 60-70 crores. With about 8,500 products across categories, the wholesale outlet will cater to the small and large grocers, entrepreneurs, offices and HoReCa (hotels, restaurants, caterers) industry.
Metro Cash & Carry is present in 26 countries with over 760 self-service wholesale stores. It entered the Indian market in 2013 and is present in cities including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi, Ludhiana and Jaipur. Other than moving ahead with its offline retail expansion plans, Metro would also focus on ecommerce – a unique move planned in India and a first for Metro operations worldwide.
The German retailer has started a pilot called Metro Direct a few days ago in Bengaluru. Metro Direct is an online service that allows existing customers to order non-food items online, even if an item is not available at a Metro outlet.
