Reliance Brands to bring Japanese retailer Muji in India

The first few standalone Muji stores will be opened in Delhi and Mumbai by middle of next year. Known for its eco-friendly products with a no-frills, no-labels ethos, the 2.2-billion dollars (over Rs 14,000 crores) retailer has presence across more than 700 stores globally. In India, Muji will offer all its products through large-format standalone stores at sizes ranging from 6,000-10,000 sq. ft.

Recently, Asics, Japanese sports shoes and apparel company which earlier had distribution partnership with Reliance, opened it office in Gurgaon. The company is looking at manufacturing as well as retailing its range in India through mono-brand stores. And another Japan-based sportswear company ‘Mizuno’ joined hands with Stag International to enter the lucrative Indian market.

Reliance Brands runs 100 standalone stores of 18 international brands in India, including the likes of Kenneth Cole, Steve Madden, Diesel, Brooks Brothers, among others. The plan is also in the pipeline to make a foray into beauty products segment, women’s lingerie and kids’ wear, where it is currently eyeing a partnership deals with a foreign brands.
