Titan now plans to make premium ethnic wear and accessories under the Tanishq brand. The Tata Group company, which is known for its watches, will now make saris to take on retailers like Fabindia. As industry experts says it would be a logical extension of the brand.

Titan already has invested a lot of money to give Tanishq a designer look and feel. So, if they launch wedding trousseau in zari and gold, as brand expert Harish Bijoor points out, it would work great for the brand. But at the same time, it may not be so easy for Titan because the sari market is totally unorganised and unbranded. In terms of value it may be huge but so far no brand has really targeted it. The last brand was Vimal. Also, sourcing saris could be an uphill task as they are produced in different parts of the country. People in the know of the business will have to be hired to get the right type of saris for the brand. As of now there are a few players in the market in the ethnic wear category who have been successful.

Titan has also been present in eyewear and multi-brand watch retail through its Titan Eye Plus and Helios stores. Early in January 2016, it tied up with MontBlanc and will now open five exclusive boutiques across the country by March. It is also planning to launch Swiss watch brand Favre Leuba which was acquired for around Rs 14 crore in 2011.
